1) Why were the scrims needed for the Hilliard Darby Marching Band? The scrims give us the ability to help communicate the stories behind our shows, and to stage equipment and props out of view of the audience. That will really enhance the overall presentation, giving a more professional appearance, which can even translate into higher scores at competitions.
2) How do you plan on adapting the scrims each year to fit each specific show theme? We can display different images to fit each show, use different numbers of them as needed, and even place that in various locations around the field. They give us a lot design flexibility.
3) How many years do you plan on using the scrims? I imagine we will use them until they fall apart That should be quite a long time!
4) How mobile are the scrims? They are much more mobile than I initially suspected. It just took some time to figure out the best way to transport them to events, and in/out of stadiums. They are a bit heavy, but I think that's beneficial- it means they will be less likely to be blown over by a strong wind.
5) What can you do to make the scrims work better for the band going forward? I think we'll use them very similarly to how we did this year. But in the future we won't have to take time to figure out how to move them, transport them, load them, etc. The design options I noted above will be very beneficial as well. Using them in different locations would give us the ability to create "stages" on the football field by visually isolating smaller areas, drawing audience attention to whatever we do there (solos, special movements, etc). I imagine we'll explore a lot of options in our design process during the coming years.
